Coyotes are common throughout most of the United States. Coyotes look like small German shepherds or wolves and come in several color phases. Coyotes can be gray, reddish, black, or even albino.
Coyotes are typically nocturnal, meaning they mostly sleep during the day and are active at night. Coyotes are often times seen during the day, and this is often a viewed as a sign that the coyote may be sick. That is not always the case, but it is a best practice to avoid a coyote day or night. The coyote probably wants to avoid you as well. Coyotes have become accustomed to seeing humans on a regular basis, so they may not always run when approached.
Coyote breeding season is typically in January-February. They birth their young, 3-5 pups, in April or May. The pups will be able to fend for themselves by the time their first winter comes.

Both red and gray fox are common throughout Tennessee. Foxes are mostly active at night and at sunrise / sunset, meaning they mostly sleeping during the day. However, it is not uncommon to see foxes during the day, especially during the spring when they have their young. This is often a viewed as a sign that the fox may be sick, but more than likely it is hunting for food or sunning itself.
Foxes are typically in mating pairs all year long. The fox family will raise their young together and sometimes with the help of other fox families or previous litters. Foxes typically live in burrows. These can be at the base of a tree, a hole in the ground, rock piles, culverts, and sometimes under a shed or deck. This can be a problem if the den is close to your home, or perhaps it is your home!
Foxes typically feed on small rodents, such as voles, mice, moles, rats, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, and sometimes fruit. Foxes have also been known to prey on cats and small dogs.
